Early Literacy

In The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease says, "It's not about teaching your child how to read; it's about teaching a child to want to read." Learning to read is a skill that comes to children at different ages. The reading process builds on skills learned from birth through adulthood. During the fifth and sixth years, continue to build those skills:

• Let your children see you read magazines, cookbooks or car manuals - if you like to read, they will, too!
• Read backwards, top to bottom, or back to front sometimes - whatever it takes to make your child laugh and show you how to do it right!
• Make a special reading corner with pillows or a soft chair and a good light.

Come to the Library, and we will help your children find books to meet their changing interests and needs!

Library staff share picturebooks, stories, interactive music and movement in a 30 minute session. For ages 3 to 6 years.

Kits include books, music CDs and felt stories on a specific theme. Located in the Downtown Library's Children's Center and available for check-out.
